Abstract

This research paper presents the results obtained after analysing the answers given by a number of 170 engineering students to questions referring to the current role of English, both in engineering education and in engineers’ professional activity, especially when that activity is carried out in multinational companies.

In addition, it emphasizes the importance of presenting students, during the early stages of their academic education, with the advantages provided by a good command of the English language. First, because employers in the field of engineering, especially those representing multinational companies (and such multinational companies are present in Oradea) need employees with a good grasp of English. Second, because academic education often involves the use of English for conducting research and/or for presenting the results of research.

Author Biographies

  • Simona Abrudan Caciora, University of Oradea

Simona Veronica Abrudan Caciora is a lecturer PHD at the University of Oradea, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, where she has been teaching English for Specific Purposes since 1999, and Professional Communication since 2015. Throughout this period, she constantly aimed at improving her teaching skills and helping students develop English language and communication abilities. She has published five workbooks dedicated to the study of English for engineering students, two course books aiming at helping engineering and medical students improve their communication abilities, and two books dealing with the image of the city as evinced in Post-War British literature. Among the 40 published studies, 7 focus on teaching English for Specific Purposes and on increasing students’ motivation to put effort into learning English and develop good communication abilities.

  • Amalia Sturza, University of Oradea

Mrs Amalia Sturza is a university assistant professor teaching English for Specific Purposes at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Oradea, Romania for 16 years. Amalia received her doctorate in Stylistics of the English language with the PhD title “Edgar Allan Poe’s Prose Style” from Al.I.Cuza University of Iasi, Romania.

She is the coauthor of books and articles on stylistics and also on ESP amongst them A STYLISTIC APPROACH TO THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, THE METAPHOR OF DEATH IN EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SHORT, LANGUAGE AND STYLE IN THE PIT AND THE PENDULLUM, THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO AND THE TELL-TALE HEART, MOTIVATION TO LEARN ENGLISH: A CASE STUDY ON ENGINEERING STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ORADEA.

  • Anamaria Supuran, University of Oradea

Ms. Anamaria Supuran is an associate professor within the University of Oradea, Faculty of Environmental Protection, teaching courses in English for Specific Purposes in the field of environmental engineering, food industry and technology, agriculture and forestry. Besides her didactic activity, she is also preoccupied in doing research that has in view either linguistic aspects of English language (taboo words and euphemisms, evolution of words during the time, metaphors in specific contexts) or aspects that consider new teaching methods or tools in the ESP, such as the introduction of “serious games” after they have been tested in different international European projects (Erasmus Intensive Programme – Cradle-to-Cradle in Higher Education) or in the classroom. She is the author of different books and papers, the most relevant ones being: Language in Motion: Taboo Words and Euphemisms in the English Language and Literature (book),English for Environmental Sciences (course for students), Dictionary of Nutrition (Romanian-English, English-Romanian), TabooWords and Euphemisms in Lady Chatterley’s Lover (paper),Slang Terms for Drinks, Drunks and Habits of Drinking (paper),Introducing Environmental Concepts through Metaphors to Adult Learners (paper),Implicationsof students’ learning strategies upon the design of an ESP programme (paper).
