ENGLISH TEACHERS' ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN AI INTEGRATION: A NARRATIVE INQUIRY

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become more widespread and has posed some concerns in terms of how it is being used in education. This study explored the ethical considerations of English language teachers while integrating AI into their teaching practices. Using a narrative approach to qualitative inquiry, teachers' experiences in using AI technologies were deduced from the semi-structured interviews. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework was utilized to generate significant themes. These experiences are creatively described as follows: The Edge: Navigating the Pedagogical Skies using AI, Turbulence Ahead: The Pitfalls of AI Overdependence, Mapping an Ethical Pathway in the Digital Skies, Teachers as AI Pilots: Mastering the Skies Together, and The Sky Ahead: Venturing the Future of AI. Moreover, AI has significantly impacted teachers’ pedagogy, allowing them to personalize lessons, save time, and learn from various resources. On the contrary, concerns about copyright, creativity, biases, and loss of human touch emerged. The findings of this study provide insights on the integration of AI in English language classrooms especially in formulating guidelines of use while adhering to ethical principles.

  • Argie O. Suello, English Instructor, Berlitz Philippines

    Argie Omaña Suello is a licensed professional teacher based in the Philippines. He is connected with Berlitz US as an online English teacher, specializing in Global English and Business English for Latin American and Japanese students. He holds a Master of Arts in Education major in English Language Teaching from Cebu Normal University, and he is presently pursuing his Doctorate in English Language Teaching at the same institution.

     He worked in Customer Service before becoming a teacher, and he enjoys teaching English to students of diverse ages and nurturing their confidence.

  • Rivika C. Alda, Professor V, Cebu Normal University

    RIVIKA C. ALDA, LPT, Ed.D. is a Professor V at Cebu Normal University (CNU). She finished her Bachelor’s Degree in Education major in English (awarded Magna Cum Laude), Master’s Degree in Education (awarded as Best Thesis), and Doctorate Degree in Education (under CHED-scholarship Grant) major in English Language Teaching (ELT) in the same university. She was designated as the Chair of the programs Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) and Diploma for Professional Education (DPE) from 2018-2020 and was appointed Secretary of the Research Ethics Committee of CNU from 2017-2019. She was also the Research Chair of the college from 2022-2024. She is currently handling subjects both in undergraduate and graduate studies at CNU.

                   She has also co-authored published books such as Building and Enhancing New Literacies across the Curriculum, Language Learning Materials Development, Teaching and Assessment of Grammar, Teaching and Assessment of the Marcroskills, Technology for Teaching and Learning, Public Speaking, and Campus Journalism. She is also a National Prototype Syllabi writer in Pre-Service Teacher Education in English Major subjects. She has also published research articles in ACI and Scopus-indexed journals with citations from varied topics in Education, English Language Teaching, and Educational Technology. She has disseminated these works in different national and international research fora.
